Sculptra

Sculptra or Polylactic acid is a skin filler used for treatment of deep wrinkles and scars and for atrophic (Thinned, aged) skin. It is FDA approved for HIV lipoatrophy (shrinking of fat tissue).
It is also used for treatment of sunken cheeks not related to HIV therapy as well as for treatment of isolated cellulite.

Sculptra is a very safe product. It is the same substance found in subcutaneous (under the skin) sutures. These sutures have been used for many years in general in plastic surgery and have an outstanding record of safety.

Sculptra is a polymer of Lactic acid.A polymer is a large molecule made of multiple, chemically linked, identical small molecules. In the case of Sculptra, the small molecule is lactic acid, which is found in yogurt, giving it the sour taste.

Sculptra is biocompatible, biodegradable and immunologically inert. It stimulates collagen production by the fibrocytes in the skin. This is a prolonged process so that the ultimate correction may last 1 to 3 years.

It has, similar to the sutures mentioned above, an excellent record of safety. Dr. Eugene and Steven Mandrea have treated numerous patients with Sculptra in Chicago and suburbs.”
