What Are Blistering Diseases?

Blistering diseases are a series of complex disorders that cause eruptions on either the skin or mucous membranes. The underlying conditions can be genetic or acquired. Here are two of the most common blistering diseases.

Epidermolysis Bullosa

Epidermolysis bullosa is a cluster of genetic disorders that cause the skin to erupt into blisters and lesions after only slight trauma, such as scratching or minor bumps. This sequence of conditions can trigger outbreaks on the skin and even on the lining of some internal organs.

Although most categories of epidermolysis bullosa are inherited conditions, they might not become evident until young adulthood. While no cure exists, successful treatment strategies can minimize the appearance and discomfort of blisters, and even make outbreaks less frequent.

Bullous Pemphigoid

Bullous pemphigoid is an acquired condition that develops when the lowest membrane of the epidermis is attacked by the immune system. It is extremely rare, and typically occurs in either older adults, people taking certain classes of immune-suppressive medications, or patients undergoing radiation therapies.

Bullous pemphigoid generally triggers blisters in portions of the skin in proximity to the joints, such as armpits, calves, and thighs, but they can appear all over the body. The blisters range in size from as small as a pinprick to ping-pong ball-sized or larger.

While blistering diseases can be successfully managed, there is no cure. Moreover, untreated blistering diseases can develop into degenerative medical conditions with potentially fatal outcomes.

Blistering Disease Diagnosis

Blistering disease diagnosis will involve a physical examination, accompanied by a series of diagnostic tests. These tests might include blood tests and biopsies to determine the fundamental cause of the blistering.

Because the causes of blistering diseases are quite diverse, they can be challenging to diagnose precisely. The dermatological experts at IDI offer next-generation diagnostic tools and protocols designed to identify the underlying pathologies quickly and accurately.

Blistering Disease Treatment Options

Treatment options can vary depending upon the type of blistering disease as well as the age and overall health of the patient. Treatment solutions frequently include the administration of corticosteroids and sometimes immunosuppressive agents.
